Fourth Degree Color Corps Protocol

 Desires for Color Corps at Church events require an invitation for Color Corps participation. This request is typically made by the pastor, rector, bishop, or the organization sponsoring the event (or by someone acting with their authorization).

 

If the event is being held in the parish, it is considered proper protocol that the pastor is aware of and approves the invitation. A parish council, ministry, or Knights of Columbus council should not invite a Fourth Degree Color Corps to participate in a parish liturgy without the pastor's knowledge and approval.

 

Requests should be submitted as early as possible; four to eight weeks in advance is preferred for major events.

A typical request contains:

• A respectful invitation.

• A brief description of the occasion.

• Why the presence of the Color Corps would enhance the celebration.

• Event details.

  • Name of the sponsoring organization or parish

  • Nature of the event

  • Date and time

  • Exact location

  • Arrival/reporting time requested

  • Name and contact information of the event coordinator

  • Expected duration

  • Whether swords will be permitted (some bishops or venues prohibit drawn swords)

  • Any special instructions regarding processions, seating, or vesting.

• A request for confirmation. Note: The requesting organization should await confirmation from the Assembly before announcing or publicizing Color Corps participation.

 

Once the pastor approves the invitation, the request is sent to the Faithful Navigator or Color Corps Commander of the Fourth Degree Assembly. The Assembly leadership then coordinates the Color Corps, obtains any necessary approvals within the Fourth Degree chain of command, and assigns Sir Knights. Individual Sir Knights should not be contacted directly to request participation in a Color Corps event. All requests should be submitted through the Faithful Navigator or Color Corps Commander after obtaining the pastor's approval.

This reflects the Church's principle that the pastor is responsible for the liturgical life of his parish. The Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree recognizes that authority and does not independently decide to participate in parish liturgies without the pastor's invitation or consent.

For example, if an organization requested the Color Corps for:

• a Confirmation,

• a Feast Day or Memorial Mass,

• a Parish Anniversary, or

• a Knights of Columbus Corporate Communion,​

The customary practice would be for the organization to:

1. Obtain the pastor's approval.

2. Send a formal request—often on parish or organization letterhead indicating the pastor's approval—to the Faithful Navigator of the Assembly, not by contacting individual Sir Knights directly.

3. The Assembly coordinates the Color Corps through its chain of command.

 

This is considered both good ecclesiastical protocol and good Knights of Columbus protocol. This ensures that the request is evaluated, approved, and staffed according to Fourth Degree protocol.

 

So, the distinction is:

• Ecclesiastical authority: The pastor (or bishop, for diocesan events) approves the participation.

• Knights of Columbus authority: The Assembly and Fourth Degree leadership determine whether and how the Color Corps can fulfill the request.

 

For example:

The members of St. John the Baptist Social Justice League respectfully request the presence of the Fourth Degree Color Corps for our Parish Mass celebrating the Feast of St. Michael on Sunday, September 27, 2026. Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. Sir Knights are requested to report by 9:45 a.m. We would be honored by your participation in the entrance and recessional processions. Please advise if your Assembly is able to provide a Color Corps for this event.

 

The Faithful Navigator or Color Corps Commander will then:

• Obtain any required approval from the District Master.

• Determine whether enough Sir Knights are available.

• Coordinate participation with nearby assemblies if additional members are needed.

• Confirm the request with the requesting organization.

 

The Fourth Degree Color Corps exists to honor God, the Church, and our nation through its visible participation in liturgical and ceremonial events. Following these procedures demonstrates respect for the authority of the Church, the organizational structure of the Knights of Columbus, and the volunteer commitment of the Sir Knights who serve in the Fourth Degree Color Corps. Observing these protocols helps ensure that every request is handled in an orderly, respectful, and dignified manner, allowing the Color Corps to fulfill its mission of adding solemnity, reverence, and honor to significant religious and civic occasions.
