At February's Monthly Council Social, Grand Knight, Lou Manz, turned over the floor to Faithful Navigator, Tom Scherch. This was the fruition of Tom's goal of honoring our local war veterans by supporting the First Coast Honor Flight. Honor Flights across the nation provide trips to Washington D.C. for our war heroes to see their national war memorial erected there.
Tom was disappointed in previous Holly Balls. Holly Balls, held near Christmas as the name might indicate were open only to the Sir Knights of local Assemblies and their spouses. Recent events were sparsely attended and were less than successful, in spite of the fraternity provided. Tom's vision was to host an event that would not only be well-attended, but have a meaningful cause. The marriage of First Coast Honor Flight and the Holly Ball was begun.
Through Tom's direction and the efforts of many Assembly and Council members and their spouses and families, the event was billed as the "Annual Holly Ball Christmas Spectacular" and lived up to its expectation's; netting nearly $6,000 for this wonderful cause. The Assembly stepped up and rounded up the donation to an even amount.
It should be noted that the decorations played a substantial role in the success of the event. Mardelle Wehby worked endlessly to perfect the look of the drapes, tables, stage, and walls.
At the Council's Monthly Social, Tom presented Candace Mabry, the daughter of a deceased World War II veteran with a check for $6,000, which included the funds necessary to send a member of Assembly 3154 to Washington D.C. as a Guardian for one of our local war veterans on an upcoming Honor Flight.
Candace thanked the Assembly and all who attended and explained that FCHF is one of the newest members of the network that was lucky to survive the COVID pandemic; where others were not so lucky.
The Grand Knight wishes to thank our Historical Photographer, Mardelle Wehby for providing photos of the event.
